Pledge to Restore Civility, Counter Oppression, and Speak Against Harm
I pledge from this day onward that:- I will take time to examine my own prejudices and biases and take action to heal oppressive and/or racist perspectives within myself.- I will work with others because this work is best done in collaboration with others, rather than in isolation.- I will learn and deepen in my understanding of different cultures, identities, and religions and recognize our interdependence.- I will interrupt when I witness words of intimidation, mockery, bullying, harassment, hurt, and/or oppression.- I will interrupt when I witness actions intended to intimidate, mock, bully, harass, harm, or violate the civil rights or personhood of anyone.- I will courageously and humbly join with others committed to a world where people of a variety of religions, cultures, races, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, abilities, and classes can all thrive.- I will promote the truth that all are worthy of love and compassion as we work to remove symbols, speech, and conduct that suggest that some are less worthy.- I will recognize the tendency to be a bystander and instead lean into discomfort to ease the suffering of another.- I will talk with my family, friends, and faith community about ways to know better, be better, and do better to eradicate racism and obliterate oppression.
When I fail to honor this covenant, this set of promises, I will seek support from those in my identity group(s) and communities to help bring me back into right relationship. And I am open to being called back in when I fail to notice that I am not upholding these promises.
